Launch of fund to get Brixton Windmill grinding flour again

“When will you be grinding flour?” was the most frequent question visitors asked us this year.

Brixton Windmill is a much-loved Lambeth landmark, and producing Brixton flour would help sustain its future when current funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund ends in 2015.

So we are launching a big public appeal for money to get Brixton Windmill grinding by 2016 – its 200th birthday!

A fund of £20k – to be raised in £5k stages – will help us to sort out the best way to produce Brixton flour without affecting our public open days and school visits.

We need the money to carry out a feasibility study into:

  • ensuring we meet food production/hygiene and health and safety regulations
  • securing a supply of organic grain
  • paying for milling expertise and training in how to work the fully-restored electric driven stones
  • setting up a partnership with experienced millers (local if possible) for finishing processes such as flour sifting, packaging and storage
  • marketing Brixton flour not just at Brixton Windmill but locally in Brixton Market and eventually further afield
  • working with local bakers – also potential partners

  • We need a catchy campaign title - if you can come up with a great name for the appeal we want to hear it!

  • We need great ideas to kick start the fund and raise the first £5k. If you have some great ideas for special events and/or attracting big sums from donors, get in touch!
